Subject: Engine Light?

Anyone know the exact meaning of the "check engine" light on '94 Saab 900S? It's been mostly on, and been unsuccessfully "repaired" by two different shops only to have the light come back on again (and now STAY on) a few days later. Are any diagnostic steps I can take myself to determine whether or not the detector is faulted, or if there really is an engine problem? Would there be any accompanying engine symptoms I should look for? I've noted nothing obvious-- no missing, though the wife is certain there's been some loss of power (and she might be right since she drives it more than I do). Any help or advice appreciated, Doug
