Subject: Easy trim for -88 900?

Hi. I would like a confirmation (or contradiction) to a rumour I heard about the 1988 8-valve fuel injection variant of SAAB 900. A friend of mine told me that for this model year the engine power was increased by some 10 to 15 hp (don't ask me how) but this increase was de-trimmed out with an extra "can" in the exhaust system because the increased power would have forced SAAB to make new brakes etc which would make the price go up. My friend told me that it might be possible to get this extra power back by simply removing this can and replacing it with a straight pipe. I am not sure if this would only apply to Swedish sold cars (yes I live in Sweden) but if anyone could shed some light on this matter I would appreciate it since I'm the proud owner of a 1988 SAAB 900i (I beleive that it is called something else in the US). Thanks in advance. /Johan
