Why not 'lower headlights' or > 'auxiliary headlights'? They are called fog lights because they are mounted > as close to the road surface as possible in order to illuminate the road > below the level of the fog. Headlights are worthless in heavy fog because > the illuminate the /fog/ above the road, not the road. I find that using them along with my driving lights (low beams) I see much more of the road than without them. There was one deer that I spotted that I attributed to the presence of my fogs. Yeah sometimes I see other fog lights that annoy me, but the purpose of ME having my lights, fog or not is so *I* can see, not for you. Me. I'll guarantee that my fog lights won't bother you one bit. Maybe it's the presence of four points of light instead of two that bothers you so much ;-)
