I have worked on Saabs every day for the last 16 years for a living and the recommended oil is 10w30. I have used Mobil 1 10w30 in my 86 and it now has 240000+ miles on it with the original turbo. From my experience with turbo cars, both Saab, Toyota, and Volvo, thicker oils like xxW50 cause premature failure. 5Wxx is just too thin for my comfort. If a synthetic is used, you can get by with longer change intervals and less cool down periods. I go 5000 miles on oil changes and usually do not allow much over a 20 sec cool down after 100+mph runs. Have driven the car this way since I owned it, no problems with any engine lubrication. Coking is much more common with mineral oils and extended intervals as the additives in mineral oil break down faster. But the key is changing the oil frequently and using a high quality filter.
