Subject: Re: Buying a new Saab

I have always driven saabs, the first being a '71 Saab 96, the second being an '85 900, and my most recent being a '94 900 se Turbo.I have always bested 200K on the odometer, but trust me, my current Saab will be the last one. It has been beset by a myriad of annoying and sometimes expensive problems. Electrical/circuit board glitches, cooling system problems-- my hoses were totally deteriorated at 55,000 miles, which was not covered under warranty, ac condensation leaks in the passenger compt, which took 3 trips to the dealer to resolve, and my last problem, upper strut mounts which ripped away from the strut stems, leaving me with no effective front suspension at 81,000 miles. The Saab organization refused to even consider any cost relief to fix this $450 problem, saying I was 1000 miles out of warranty. (I might add that neither the dealer or 4 independent Saab mechanics I talked to had ever seen this problem occur.) I was reasonable and polite in all my dealings with them, but I received some of the most arrogant treatment I have ever experienced from them. The dealer, to their credit, was kind enough to discount the parts when I decided to do the repair myself. I might add that in order to run my vehicles as long as I do, I "baby" them, and maintain them scrupulously. My recommendation? Opt for the Maxima!
