Subject: Re: '90 Saab 900, rough morning idle

You might want to check the following: Plug wires and cap Plugs Belts Alternator Battery (check battery voltage before starting car in morning) I have had similar problems, and it turned out to be a combination of a bad plug wire (plug #1 ? (closest to bulkhead) comes loose a lot and arcs, burning the metal in the cable connector), and an old battery. Belts were (still are) a bit worn, will replace them when we get a Saturday where it isn't raining. I have a 2-4 cup per 1000 mile leak in my coolant, seems to be a pinhole leak in the radiator. Check the radiator for leaks by starting from cold after dark (cool damp evening or morning would be best), and with headlights off, let the car slowly warm up. My leak appears halfway between cold and normal idle temp, and can be seen as a plume of steam from the front bottom of radiator, best viewed with a flashlight. There is never any liquid discharge, steam only, and by the time the car warms enough for the cooling fan to kick in, it has stopped steaming. You might have a similar problem, where the leak is right onto hot parts, causing the fluid to disappear without ever dripping on floor. Make sure you keep the area dark and use cross-lighting, like a flashlight or work lamp so you can see the steam. Hope that helps.
