A friend of mine is changing out the pads on the front disk brakes of her mid-late '80s Saab 900. She got the old pads out and left the car for a while. Meanwhile, the pistons were pushed out towards the disk. (They haven't come out far enough to contact the disk, though.) Now she can't get them back into the caliper to make room for the new pads. So, some questions: Will (have) the pistons come completely out of the cylinders? How can one tell? What does one do in this case? The Haynes manual says to twist the pistons while pushing them back into the caliper. How does one accomplish this? (My friend tried angle-nose pliers, but couldn't get near a good enough grip on the piston to push it back in.) What good is twisting the piston supposed to do?
