I drive an 87 9000S 5 spd, and I have owned an 83 900T and 87 900S, all 5 spd. I believe the 9000 model uses brake fluid to operate the hydraulics of the clutch, just like the 900 models. You could have a bad clutch slave cylinder. The 900 models also had a hydraulic line that ran to the slave cylinder. In 1994 that line on my 83 900T ruptured just as I was about to leave a stop light. No clutch. The car was stuck in first gear, until I could get off the road. I had to have the car towed and the line replaced. It has to be properly bled out to work correctly. Because of the transverse mount the 9000 may not have this specific line. Check the bulletin board at www.saabnet.com. Ken W. 87 9000S
