My friend with her late '80s 900 finally managed to get her brake pads changed out on the left front wheel, using a circlip pliers to turn the piston. Now she's on the right-side wheel. The interior pad is worn straight down to metal -- not a trace of pad remaining. The other pad is very much less worn, and has been worn diagonally (a nice flat surface, but one end is more worn down than the other) It's obvious that the brakes are actually giving some braking action -- the one pad is very worn, and the car didn't pull when braking. What's going on? Two questions: 1) What does this mean? How can the pads wear so unevenly when there's only a piston on one side? 2) She doesn't have enough space between the piston and the disk to fit anything substantial in to rotate the piston back. Can she make more room for herself somehow? Even if she is going to have the brakes serviced in some major way, she needs to get new pads in in order to move the car.
