I just finished changing the front disk brake pads with a friend on her '86 Saab 900. There were several oddities about her brakes: On one side, the piston-side pad was completely worn off, but the yoke-side pad was much less, and unevenly, worn. Can this be a problem with the yoke, or the piston assembly, or both, or what? On the good side, the yoke moved pretty easily in its groove, but on the bad side it needed to be pounded. Is that unexpected? On both sides, it looks like the bads before the last set were too small, leaving a band of rusted disk around the outside, that abraded all four of the last pads. Is there any safe way of getting the rust off short of having a shop turn the disks? After we finished up, on the test drive, the brakes started smoking on one side. When I disconnected the hand brake on that side, they stopped. Does the hand brake normally need to be readjusted after changing the pads? While the car was still up, and the handbrake was disconnected on that side but connected on the other side, my friend pulled the hand brake on inside once. Could that have thrown the handbrake out of adjustment somehow?
