Saab puts out an "Official Service Manual" for 16 valve Saabs from 1985-1993. I paid around $50. Note: not the same as the shop manual but is helpful. Saab p/n - 02 16 861, ISBN # is 0-8376-0313-7 if you want to have your bookstore order it for you. There's a process described for displaying the fault code which apparently is read out through the check engine light and a table listing the fault codes, probable faults and corrective action required. Its more complicated for the engine in the 89 than in my '87 900S. Try to get the book, it at least puts you wise to what the mechanics are doing. Sorry I can't be more helpful, the '87 check engine light merely flashes 3, 4 or 5 times and isn't capable of displaying a code.,
