The turbos did get a 16-valve engine in '85. In '86 the 900 S got one as well, but the 900 base model remained as an 8 valve until 1989. So the car you're looking at was the last year of the 8-valve Saab. As far as transmissions go, the automatic Saabs I've driven were not nearly as good as the manuals.
