When choosing a full flow filter you should use the largest filter that will fit. You are correct about the larger area - better filtration. The bypass valve opens less also. Most European and Japanese cars have the same thread size and gasket size as a Ford FLIA or equivalent. Some cars don't have enough room for the big filters so it is easier to just recommend a little filter for everything. Watch out for bypass valves that are in the bottom of the filter. Large abrasives can accumulate in the bottom and can be flushed into the bearings when the valve opens. Most filters have the valve in the top but some don't. I use both the full flow filter and a depth bypass filter. With this type of filter system "routine" oil drains are eliminated and engine life is greatly extended.
