Subject: Did I ruin my Engine ? Timing chain replacement off two teeth....

I replaced my timing chain on my 89 900T and got it back together two teeth off (cams were advanced about 25 degrees from the crank). As I fed the new chain in, I didn't feel any valves hitting (turing crank with wrench), and then, after replacement I unhooked the ignition and cranked it until the oil pressure came up. Once I hooked up the ignition and started it, there was this noisey clacking noise coming from the head. Still, turning it over with the started and disabling the ignition showed no obvious signs of additional load on the starter. After pulling the valve cover and checking the chain timing, finding out what a stupid mistake I had made, correcting it and starting it up again, it seems to idle and run fine (I haven't driven it yet), but it has the noise of bad lifters (louder than normal clicking, not the injectors). My question, do you think I bent half the valves, (how would I determine that)or do you think I damaged some lifters and they're stuck (and how do I determine that)? THanks for your help. Never work till 2:00am just to get a job done, JC. What kind of range do you think this repair will be ? -- Jim Collins Issaquah, WA (206)817-3102
