This has happened to both my wife and myself more than once. What happens is that we have mistakenly hit the "open trunk" button on the alarm remote while the car is parked. The trunk looks closed, but it is ajar just enough to turn on the courtesy light in the trunk.Then the car may sit at the airport or in the garage for several days. When you get back, the battery is completely dead. Needless to say, we no longer leave the light switch turned on in the trunk anymore.
