I've used Maguiers(sp?) paint cleaner with much success to remove build up, such as excessive wax and road salt/tar, etc. It's an extremely mild abrasive cleaner with a light polish/wax built in, and it seems to work well on older cars, I'd be careful on newer cars with clearcoat finishes. In reference to Griot's garage, I've recieved this publication, and the stuff seems to be way overpriced. It's a nicely made catalog, and that's reflected in the prices.
