Subject: Cost of new transmission?

Hello all. I've got a 1990 900S with ca. 112k miles on it. I've recently moved, so when the transmission began slipping I took it to the first dealer I saw, rather than one I had a previously established relationship with. They told me I'd need a new transmission at a cost of $3000. I knew transmissions were supposed to be expensive, but that seems a bit much. What really makes me question this is that the bulb in the left side of the dash keeps going out and they said that the foil was melted and it would need a new socket or something and that would cost $700. Now that, I know, is insane, so it made me wonder whether the price they quoted me for the transmission is really fair. I can live without knowing what time it is, but I've gotta either fix the transmission or get a new car. Help? Leigh
