Subject: Re: Why is Saab a good winter car?

The 4WD Myth: A while back, SAAB, in conjuntion with Subaru, tested a 4WD drive 9000 against its standard FWD counterpart. The results of those studies showed that there where no significant difference in winter driving between 4WD and FWD. Therefore, the added cost (initial and maintenance) where not justified. However, these tests where done with professional drivers, and Swedish drivers who have plenty of experience with winter driving. (Which brings up another story, that of my 76 year-old neighbor driving everywhere in an icy winter with a '76 Chevy Impala and bald tires. He learned to drive on the frozen lakes of Michigan.) The most important, IMO, reason that SAABs make good winter cars, is that they basically handle better than the average car, and certainly trucks and SUVs.
