When I had my 83 900T, I was told if the Turbo was going to go, I would
see black smoke.
A couple of dealers tried to scare me because the Turbo bearings were
loud. They quieted down each time I changed the oil and filter. I don't
think it is your turbo. If you don't get an answer here, try the
