Subject: 9000 Turbo Fuel Injection - Help needed

I have a 1991 Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo. A couple of weeks ago I noticed a hesitancy in accelerating - like the effect you would get on a carburettor equipped car if the accelerator pump was not working. Since then the problem has got much worse. The car is misfiring, lurching and reluctant to accelerate. There is also a smell of un-burnt petrol. At idling it hunts between 1000 and 1200 rpm and feels like its going on three cylinders. The Check Engine light did come on a few days ago - but only for about one mile. Switching the ignition on and off again got rid of it. The car will run smoothly at times (which suggests perhaps an intermittent bad connection) but these times are getting rarer. I don't think my local (75 miles away) Saab dealer has computer diagnostic equipment, and the dealer I would normally use is 200 miles away, so I would like to eliminate as much as possible myself before making the trip. I have checked all obvious electrical connections for coming loose, changed the plugs and looked for loose vacuum lines. I did find an open, unused connector in the back of the bellows from the air mass sensor to the turbo. My Saab dealer says that this does not appear on their drawings at all, so in the absence of a stray pipe which looks as if it has come out of there, I have plugged it. This resulted in a slight improvement in performance, but still with a long way to go. Can anyone offer any suggestions on methodical fault finding ? Can anyone point me to where I can get instructions on reading the ECU error codes without going to a Saab dealer (on my previous Citroen this could be done with a length of wire and a light bulb) ? My apologies if this kind of question has been covered before. I am new to the list and if this is a FAQ, perhaps someone could e-mail me directly with pointers to the answers.
