About a week ago my '84 900S (260,000 miles) started making a loud rumble/hum noise. It got so bad that I now have to wear earplugs above 50 mph. I thought it might be a tire problem but I checked them and they are fine. When I jacked both front tires off the ground, I noticed that when I turn the drivers side tire, there is no noise. When I turn the passenger side tire, there is a noise that makes me think I might have bad bearings somewhere along that driveshaft. The noise sounds like it is coming from in toward the gearbox, perhaps in the differential housing. Right now my car is up on jack stands. The driveshaft and differential housing are off. I cannot find an obvious problem with the roller bearings in the differential housing. There are some needle bearings in the hole where the housing was and they look ok too. I'm inclined to replace those needle bearings and the roller bearings also just to play it safe. Do you think this is a good idea? Or might the problem be elsewhere? Any suggestions/thoughts/encouragement would be appreciated. Thanks, Gary -- Interested in home-grown music and songwriting? Check out my web site at http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/morrison/295/
