Subject: Re: What does the common man think about Saab?

Stephen F. Cawley wrote in message <35FEB8DA.42A0B76Dnopsame.com>... I bought a used 1993 Green 900S Convertible last May and love it. The turbo versions are stereotyped as Yuppie mobiles here in the States. I think it is a sporty, fun to drive car. I wanted one since I was 15, and finally got to buy one 16 years later and have not regretted it a bit. Regards, Steve Cawley > I'm a Swedish university student and I'm interested in finding out what > people in the USA but also in other countries think about Saab? > > Do people think it's a classy car or a boring and ugly car or sportish > snobbish a good family car...and so on. After *agonizing* years of driving a Ford Escort and Buick Skylark, I was ready for a great car. These sloppy and ill shod members of the automotive community are like fat lumbering cattle. You feel as if you are driving around on marshmallows, with no idea if you are still on the road or not. Rowing through the gears at a pitiful rate of acceleration, it's no wonder that so many people are killed while getting onto the highway. No wonder as well that the owners of these cars are typically found in the right lane of the highway going 55 in a 70, utterly oblivious. Parts are cheap, but repairs are daily, so there goes that argument. Basically, any American car that isn't a Saturn should be shot. ESPECIALLY Cadillacs. I hate those and their morose drivers more than a whole fleet of dumptrucks stalled in the road. As soon as I got out of college, I got a 1989 900 Turbo Convertible. The Saab is considered by many here in the US as an enigma-a car for the odd and wealthy. Most consider it to be extremely fast (mine isn't) and many people comment "nice car" or "love your car" at lights and in parking lots. There is not an old timers stigma attached to it like say, a 1957 Chevy. That is, I don't get "well, my dad had one of those and we used to go to...." Thank goodness. Idiots love to race me in their Chevy Camaros, Ford Trucks, and Mazda Miatas. I am in need of a bumper sticker that says "your truck will *not* go faster than this car." In my town in Ohio, people really appreciate the Saab for what it is: a beautiful and superbly constructed automobile that is truly world class. All of my neighbors either have Saabs or Volvos though, and perhaps that sways the judgement. I am very pleased with it as it is simply constructed, robust, and well executed. I may want to go to a 1990 SPG for several gadgety features, but other than that, I am very pleased. Eff Smith 89 900TC
