Subject: Re: my car's problems

I have a SAAB 9000i -88, and hopefully you can use some of my advice. As for the LCD (not LED!) display, or EDU (Electronic Display Unit) as SAAB prefers to call it, it is illuminated from behind by a couple of light bulbs. Some of these can be broken and it is rather tricky to replace them: You'll have to remove the dashboard cover, remove the whole unit with all the instruments where the bulbs can be accessed from behind. I have done it once, and it was not an impossible task, but took some time. As for how-to, the SAAB manual from Haynes can be recommended - otherwise return to me. The level of the illumination of the instruments is regulated via a rheostat located on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel - try this first! I believe, though, that the headlights must be on in order for this to work. In Sweden there is a law stipulating that you should have your headlights on, always... Thirdly, you can toggle the information of the EDU on and off by pressing the buttons marked "R" and "INFO" (if they look the same on your car) simultaneously and keeping them depressed for a couple of seconds. Also try this first! As for the interior illumination, it could be oxidation on the door-switches. Does your light go on when you open any other door than the driver's? And what about the lights in the doors themselves? If the door-lights don't go on, it could either be oxidation or the lights could have been turned off, something you do by depressing the pin on the switch and turn it simultaneously until it locks, depressed. Useful if you are going to do some service on your car which necessitates keeping the doors open and you don't want to drain the battery.
