Thank You. > -Chris A turbocharger is an exhaust driven air compressor. Hot exhaust gasses are routed out of the engine through the turbocharger's turbine, which causes it to spin. While the turbine spins on one side of the turbo, a compressor wheel sucks in fresh air, compresses it, and sends it into the engine to be burned. By increasing the amount of air going into the engine, more fuel can be added and more power generated than a similar engine without a turbo. A supercharger is very much like a turbo, but rather than using exhaust as a source of power, it uses a belt attached to the engine to drive the compressor. Same idea, different execution. -Justin
