Subject: help with radiator fans

the engine was out on this car while getting the tranny rebuilt. Then I bought it. The car has been overheating (not bad) every now and again. Since it wasn't losing water, I assumed the thermostat was sticking. Changed it out, but it's still doing it. Started troubleshooting the fans because I've never seen the driver's side fan go on. (16 valve 900S). If I start the car, and turn on the AC, the passenger side fan goes on. If I turn the ignition switch on, and short across the temperature switch for the radiator, the passenger side fan goes on! What is supposed to kick on the driver side fan (apparently 16 valve engines have 2 fans, 8valve, 1)? Everything seems to be plugged in correctly. Any ideas?
