On the cover of last months 'Nines' was a 96 cabrio.
One of our club members has done this too. He lives in Nijverdal, near
the German border. I can (snail)mail a copy of our club magazine with an
article on his project to you.
He reinforced the rocker panels and put a brace between the rear inside
fenders, just behind the back seat. Then he cut the roof and the back
window off. The modified car had to go through our APK (= TUV =MOT) and
passed with no problem. If a car has passed such a test anywhere in the
EU it must be accepted in other EU countries as well so you should not
have a problem with the TUV if you use his design.
He took the window mechanism out of another car and put it under the
rear side windows to made them sink in the rear side panels. I believe
he used a modified soft top of a VW Beetle cabrio to fit his 96. The
cars looks great.
I know there must be at least one 96 cabrio in Sweden as I have seen a
photograph of it.
I too am planning to do such a conversion some time. I would leave the
rear window in place and make the roof slice to be replaceable, so no
soft top but more 'Targa'
E-mail me your address and I will send you some info (in Dutch, but that
should not be a problem for you)
