In my -92 9000 CS 2.3T there are 2 mechanical sensors in the front and one in the SRS controller. To deploy the airbag you have to expose one of the front sensors AND the controller sensors for deceleration at the same time. The sensors require high retardation, moving the internal reference weight some m.m. - just hitting the front sensor with a hammer won't do (not that I would try). In the -95 model the fore sensors were replaced by internal sensors. All dependable designs are based on this type of redundancy, so a single fault would not cause a potentially catastrophic event.
