Subject: Front-end "clunk" in '83 900 non-turbo

I am stumped by this one. I have a 1983 non Turbo 900 with manual shift. It has 180,000 miles. New steering rack at 100,000. There is a strange clunking noise that comes from somewhere in the front end when I brake while rolling in reverse. It only happens intermittently, and only in reverse when braking. Usually there is one loud "clunk" and then it goes away for awhile. It comes back again later if I brake in reverse after having driven for a while. I have changed the calipers, and replaced a bad ball joint. I cannot figure out what this is. Can anyone help? Could it be the front wheel bearings? Thanks! John
