Subject: Re: Front-end "clunk" in '83 900 non-turbo

I had a similar clunk on my '86 900. I can't remember if it sounded like front or rear, but it turned out to be the rubber bushes on the rear axle anti-twist (or whatever) rods. These are located in each rear wheel arch attached to the body at one end and to the top of the axle at the other. They stop the axle rotating under braking and since the force is usually forwards, they don't clunk until you reverse and then brake. Easy to repair, just buy the bushes and pay your mechanic to put them in !-) No, seriously, you need to pull off the rods, press out the old bushes and press in the new ones. If you need to lubricate the new bushes, DON'T use engine oil or grease (this attacks the rubber), just use washing up liquid. You will need to support the car on stands and may need a jack to raise and lower the axle for the fitting.
