Try testing (and relacing if necessary) the rehostat which controls the brightness of the lights, if the contacts get a bit crapped up then they lose connection and banging the dash may complete the circuit again. If this is not the problem (mine went in my 88 900t, easy fix) you may need to get into the dash and check all of the wiring/connections/sockets for the bulbs themselves. I belive there was a thread about this recently in the NG with details as to checking this out.
