Subject: Rover etc.

First - a transverse mounted engine does NOT necessarily mean unequal length drive shafts, torque steer can still be controlled using half-shafts so that drivetrain geometry is the same on both sides. Second - Nothing really wrong with McStruts, BUT the strut assemblies need to be very well designed to ensure they are rigid. Beemers are superb handling cars and they use McStruts, if the new Rover handles as well as a Beemer, they would have come very close to reaching their goal of the best handling FWD. I still, however, think that the title belongs to Audi, with their brilliant front suspension design. This is to be >Rover's first all new car since the BMW takeover. According to the rather >patriotic blurb in Auto Express Rover have been given a completely free hand >to develop the car. Their brief allegedly was to design the best front drive >car in the world all upto themselves. I have noticed 3 things from the design >that would make me seriously question this. 1) The engine is a transversly >mounted K series which means different length drive shafts and tourque steer >aplenty. Hardly a clean slate that one. 2) Front suspension consists of Mac >Pherson struts. Now the only reason why anyone would use the dreaded mac >strut is to save money, not to make a car that has superior handling. Note of >course that BMW use struts! Currently I think the best front drive cars in >the world are the R-type Honda's and they all use the double wishbones >familiar to us SAABers. 3) Rear suspension consists of BMW z axle. Now I will >not slag of the merits of the z axle but BMW designed this for cars that are >rear wheel drive and Rover make front drive! If they where given a clean >slate from which to design their suspension it shows a total lack of >imagination that they should come of with the same design as BMW, or is >something else happening here! I just hope that same thing doesn't happen >to SAAB. Also note that the new MINI is to have z axle rear and some piece of >crap in the front where the k series engine should go. > >-----------== Posted via Deja News, The Discussion Network ==---------- >http://www.dejanews.com/ Search, Read, Discuss, or Start Your Own
