I used to run the car on leaded and the only difference I noted was a smoother idle and better pickup from low revs with the leaded fuel. acceleration shows very little difference so I would say that you may have something very wrong in the fuel injection or ignition system. After you rebuild an engine you will always get a running in period. Where the piston rings renewed in this rebuild? If not then who ever has DONE your engine has put it back togther wrong! Does the car run at the correct temperature? The needle should sit half way up the green. If if doesn't and instead sits near to the bottom then you could have a problem with the thermostat. This would definetely cause you to use more fuel than you should/would normally. I am assuming that part of this rebuild included a complete service and tune up by someone who is competent with the SAAB turbo motor. I have done complete rebuilds (including pistons and bearings) on 2 engines (not SAAB, Rover). An engine in this state requires considerably more tuning/fettling effort than a simple service tune up. P.S. I drive down the M6 every couple of weeks and always get 30+ mpg. I always ask for the car to be tuned to around 2.5% CO, as this gives more power. Hard acceleration always leaves me down around 20 mpg. I onced used up 10 quids worth on a 60 mile scutch.
