At some point during the mid '80's, they switched from a centering mechanism inside the car, to one inside the transmission. I can't remember the year, but I'm gonna guess yours is inside the car, since it broke (the ones inside the tranny are very reliable). Remove the center console if present, and lift the carpet in front of the shifter. You may have to fiddle with the heater ducts too. You want to get a look at the front of the shifter assembly. Attached to the front of the housing, I think you'll find a mechanism with 2 sheetmetal arms set vertically on each side of the shaft going from the shifter to the tranny. There's a spring that hooks into the holes on the bottom of each arm to pull them toward each other. My guess is you'll find that spring missing. Get one from the dealer, hook it in, you're all set. If you don't see the mechanism, yours may be in the tranny, then you've got a *big* problem!
