the 4 speed gearbox in my 1980 900i (360,000 km) has finally decided that it has had enough. There are noises in neutral, reverse, and third gear. The car still goes in first, second, and fourth. I would appreciate some help as to my options, as replacement 1980 gearboxes are unobtainable in Tasmania. 1. What would be involved in fitting a 5 speed box and shifter from a later later model car? 2. Will 4 speed boxes from earlier SAAB 99 models fit? 3. What shoudl I check for before purchasing a second hand gearbox if it is already out of the car? Thank you. Eric Graudins Tasmania, Australia.
