Subject: Re: What Is It About Mobil 1

It's dangerous to compare aircraft oil experience with automotive experience: If he was using mineral oil (in aircraft parlance, _non-detergent_ oil), it was probably because the engine just had major work done. Mineral oil is required on most small aircraft engines for 25-50 hours after overhaul or major work like cylinder replacement. If he was using mineral oil in other circumstances, he probably was not using the correct oil. Some aircraft engines allow 45 seconds or more for oil pressure in some circumstances. If his does not, he was very neglectful for not watching the gauge after start! I do not know of a currently marketed synthetic oil approved for piston-engine aviation use (though there may be one or more). When the first ones came out for general aviation use a while back, there was a formulation error in one brand that damaged several engines. Synthetics got a bad name for the application ever since. Besides, small aircraft engines normally burn oil at a rate that would make the cost of synthetic oil unattractive to most people, further reducing the market potential. --------------------- John R.
