I used to work for BMW until I decided to get out of the car business all together. Before that I sold Saabs at the largest west coast dealer for almost three years. Actually what you're referring to (In BMW) only applies to the V8's (540, 740, 840) This problem was also largely constrained to Geographics (Eastern U.S.). Basically, the high-sulphur content gas was eating away at the cylinder walls because of some special coating. This problem was not an issue in the straight 6's or the four bangers (or the v12), but you don't see too many of those around!! $$$$ It's typical for the gas companies to laugh it off, I remember when I got a bad tank of BP Gas, they told me to go pound sand and then four days later a national story came out! It took me a week to run that garbage through my car and get it back to normal! I did find out another thing, though, some of the fuel pumps in the later autos (I would guess 96+) had problems. If you let the gas get too low in the tank the fuel pump get's kind of warm (I don't want to say "Hot" because it may freak out a few people), anyway, when you go to refill the cold gasoline will crap out the fuel pump. Now, I drive a 1997 328i and never have had a problem, but it was showing up occasionally. Just some FYI. If you ever need any dirty laundry on Saabs let me know! ;-) Markus Marge, don't discourage the boy! Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals!
