Subject: Gas Caps & Idle

Today, I flunked NJ emissions for the gas cap. Not wanting to disgrace my '87 900T with a rejected sticker, I ran to Walmart and picked up a Stant gas cap. I passed the test, but... Now it idles sometimes at 1200, sometimes at 1000, and sometimes at 800. It doesn't surge, it just picks one of those values and stays there. Then at the next time to idle (i.e., next stoplight), it will idle at a different one of the 3 values, but constantly. Obviously, the gas cap has something to do with it, so I'll replace it with a Saab OEM, or whatever's recommended. But I'm curious why this happened. Does it have something to do with the pressurized gas tank and the AIC? Could it be a symptom of some other component needing replacement or adjustment? At least Walmart's good for something and they'll take the gas cap back. Thanks, Tom
