The 2.3 N/A is perfectly adequately powered, with acceptable grunt, especially with the 5-speed. I seriously considered just such a combo myself, when I was looking to replace my '86 9000T (ended up with a 9000 Aero instead of a 900). The turbo is far less peaky than the old 900Ts, with a lower torque peak than the old days. The turbo system is very, very reliable, too, unlike the early days. Both engines have balance shafts, so are pretty quiet while under steam. They're FAST, and if you're on the highway, the torque band is pretty amazing--useful for passing quickly and safely. Mileage is decent with either car the SET is more firmly sprung, has the 16" wheels/tires, but still doesn't ride like a lumberwagon. By '96/97, Saab had exorcised many of the quality gremlins from the 900 line that are well documented in the '94 and to a lesser degree, the '95s. Transmissions are robust, as both are much more durable than the old 900 gearboxes (especially the automatic!). The seats are wonderful, and will be very comfy for those 200-mile daily jaunts. As usual, if you can get service records, they're a nice thing to have. Naah. You don't want a Maxima <grin>. While the six in the Maxima IS a honey of an engine, I find the four in the 900 to be more entertaining; the cars are very comfortable, distinctive, safe and agile. What's there not to like? Welcome back to the fold... Paul
