Subject: 88T transmission problem / first post.

I have a '88 900 Turbo (146K miles) with what I believe is a transmission bearing problem. I took it to a dealer, and we took a test drive. At first, he said that it sounded like a CV joint, but the sound was not made worse by turning, so he next focused on pinion bearings in the transmission. The noise is mechanical, and varies with wheel speed, worse under load. The shift is a little loose, but does not pop out of gear at any speed / load combinations. Dealer recommends two options: 1) Don't fix it. According to the dealer, it will probably never leave me stranded, slowly grow worse, and eventually get so loose that it will start popping out of gear under load. But, it could go another 40K miles as is. 2) Fix it. According to the same dealer, the part / transmission work is reasonable money, but will tack on an additional 60 hours labor to remove / reinstall engine and transmission assembly, making the total repair a little hard to digest. I am currently leaning toward removing the engine / transmission myself (I normally do all the work on the car myself, I have a small garage, airtools, and can get a hoist), disassembling the engine/trans and bringing the transmission to the dealer for repair. After which I would reinstall tranmission to engine, and remount. I am looking for advice, suggestions from folks who've "been there" or who can help steer me in the right direction. Thanks for any response! Alex
