Dear Mark, If you are lucky its just come adrift at either the control or valve end of the connection arm - you can get at this by removing the LH speaker/vent cover and or the radio. If you are unlucky the heater control valve has seized - which is quite a common problem on the earlier versions. To replace this you need to partialy drain the system , disconnect the two pipes on the engine side of the bulkhead and (this is the tricky bit) remove the lower facia panel plus some other bits to get at the valve (replace this with a later version plastic one from a breakers).
