Well, I bit the bullet and took it in to city saab E1 London. Turns out to be a right hand front wheel bearing thankfully plus front wheel alignment toe in way out ) and left front camber and castor was out. A check on the final drive showed up nearly no fluid, so caught just in time. The stethoscope was out, these guys certainlately restored my faith. Car now drives beautifully - I don't think I could have worked out / done this as a home mechanic - very expensive but well worth the trip. Out of interest, in there experience, they reckoned type 37 auto tranny never gives out as long as you keep up on the oil changes, we shall see...
