I just bought an 1988 Saab 900i.

My mechanic told me a trick to check if the bearings of the transmission are
not worn out.  Apparantly this is a commun problem with this year.

Put the car in Reverse, then accelerate suddenly and drive back for about 20
meters.  If the gear stick jumps out of the reverse, the bearings are worn
out (replacement : app. 400$).
