I disagree. The original post stated "the levers on the calipers bottom out against the yoke". Tightening the cables will just make them bottom sooner. Sounds to me like the problem is inside the calipers - probably the adjusting mechanism is stuck. You can mess around with it and possibly get some results, or just install rebuilt calipers. If they're original, the car is definitely entitled to a new pair. The design on those pre-'88 front calipers is *terrible*. Only other car on the planet that used a similar design was Peugeot. Need I say more? Eric Law P.S. Just thought of one more thing: check that when the e-brake lever is down, that the caliper levers return fully. Sometimes when the cables are old and binding a bit, the springs at the caliper can't pull the cable back fully. This interferes with the functioning of the self-adjusting mechanism. On occasions, I've bent the springs on the calipers a bit to give them a bit more tension...
