Subject: Re: '98 900 vs '99 9-3

I had that same decision as you 6 months ago. I test drove the 98 900SE and the 99 9-3 (non-SE) in automatic, 4-door, and thought they drove very similarly. Since bother had the Turbo 2.0 with the same power ratings, I guessed the engine was almost identical. The inside of the 900 actually felt more solid, although I don't know why since the 9-3 was supposed to be more solid. The big difference for me was that the dealer I was at had several 900SE's at great prices. I ended up buying the 900 over the 9-3 because the 900SE with leather, sunroof, auto climate control, heated seats, upgraded radio, Viking wheels... was actually significantly less expensive than a stripped 9-3 (not that the 9-3 is really bare) and I intend on keeping it for a long time. Although I could see the improvements in the 9-3 (obviously the side airbags, different radio, special head-rests, design changes...), I couldn't justify it with the price difference. (As a side, I also like the taillights on the 900 much better.) Ultimately, I have had only one small problem with my 900 since delivery - the backlight for the headlight switch dims off. The dealer changed the switch while I went in for an oil change and the problem had been gone since. I haven't heard anything bad about the 9-3's yet but I understand the latest years for the 900's have been very good (97-98). In the Boston area, a few dealers still advertise new and near new (>5000mi) 900's all the time.
