Subject: consumer reports

I'm considering buying a Saab 900SE, automatic, with the 2.5 liter V6 and 68,000 miles. It seems to be in excellent condition; I say "seems" because I haven't yet taken it to a mechanic. Consumer Reports rates the overall reliability of the 1994 Saab 900 as "much worse than average". The '95 and '96 are both rated as average, and the 1997 is "much better than average". I know that 1994 was the first year that Saab made a big change in body style, and I think it's also the first year for the British made 2.5 liter V6. Does the '94 suffer in reliability because of this? The particular car I'm looking at received regularly scheduled maintenance, and it recently had a brake repair. Are there particular trouble spots for this year/model? This would be my first Saab. I think it's a beautiful car, but I'm trying to make a practical decision, and I don't want to get stuck with a car that will need constant attention and expensive repairs. Any advice? Thanks!! Reid Hester
