Subject: Temp sending unit?

I just took a 650 mile trip in my Sabb 900s 1988. I think my temp sending unit might be faulty. As I drove further the temp gauge keep going up to almost the red zone. I shut the car down when I stopped for gas, the fans kicked in and ran for several minutes. After refueling I tried to start her up and it wouldn't. I let it cool off for a few more minutes then it restarted. I checked the Bentley Manual to test the sending unit and according to the manual I pulled the cable to the unit and grounded it and then started the car. The gauge inside just shot up to the hot point, the manual says that this is a faulty sending unit. What other problems will this faulty temp unit do? Could it cause the fans not to turn on and run at the right times or other temp related problems? Thanks in advance. dp
