Subject: advice needed--new tranny? price

have a 1989 900s w/ 149,000 miles. new to me in january of this year. my shop is telling me i now need a new tranny, and that it'll cost me $4200. seems a bit on the high side to me? 3000 for the tranny and 1160 for the labor. where do i go from here? anyone know about the tranny cost and where i might get one cheaper. they're telling me the main issue w/ it is the spider gears are loose and the pinion shaft is loose. anyone have any advice on parting it out if i don't decide to have the work done?? thanks. i am in southeastern kansas, near the ok-ks-mo-ar border.
