Subject: Re: 9-5 Tyres - noisy?

I have a -94 9000 CSE with 15" standard aero rims and I the road noise is acceptable to me. Some comparisons to other cars: - I've tried a -98 9-5 SE (sedan) with the standard 16" rims and to my suprise I did find the road noise louder then on my own 9000, at least on rough road surfaces. - I've been told that the -99 9-5 (sedan) has a upgraded rear suspension (same as on the new 9-5 station wagon) wich reduces the road noise. (I've also heard about an upgrade kit for the -98 model). I have not tried the -99 9-5 yet ,so I would appreciate a report if someone has tried both the -98 and -99 sedans and can compare. - I've drove a brand new Volvo S80 2.9 with 17" standard rims two weeks ago. And again, to my suprise I did find the road noise louder then on my own 9000. - Drive reports in many car magazines say that the Volvo S80 2,9 and 17" standard rims has much loader road noise then the Volvo S80 2.4 which has 16" rims. My conclusion is that rim size and tyre profile for cars like SAAB and Volvo is crucial for the road noise experienced inside the car. / Ulf By the way, Michelin tyres often get very good results concerning road noise in tyre tests.
