Hi, I tend to agree with David. The leak is most likely from the valve cover. I had this problem a two years ago on my 16valve 89, 900. There are two seals, an inner one around the spark plug area and the outer one. They are like big molded "O" rings and the rubber hardens with age. Replacement is relatively simple, just make sure all the mating surfaces are nice and clean and use a gob of silicone gasket sealant where the half-round rubber inserts meet the outer seal. You might also have to use some scotch tape to keep the outer gasket from falling off while lifting the cover in place. Carefully pull the tape out once you have the cover resting on the head. I think the gasket set cost about $30.- at the local Saab dealer. Hope this helps. Good luck, Karl es21212nopsamx.net wrote: > I just purchased a 88' Saab 900s, 16 valves, non turbo, 140K, the car > got an head gasket oil leak, the oil drips on the side on the engine and > burn, the smoke gets into the car which is annoying!!. > A mechanic wants $500.00 to fix it, another mechanic is asking $750.00 > Any suggestions, I've been told that this is a common problem with 88" > Saabs and major job to fix. > Still a great car I think, > Thanks!!! > Enrique Sotelo
