The six was available with the 96 - my wife had a 96 SE Convertable with the six. We replaced it with a 99 9-5 (she loved the car - only crapped out on her once - unfortunately with the top down and in a questionable part of town - but alas she needed a trunk that could haul more than two cases of wine). Interestingly, when we went to buy the 9-5, the dealer was very critical of the six, confirming what's been said in this thread. But unless the electrics shutdown referenced above was something peculiar to the six, the engine performed well.
